SSAA Victoria is looking for 60 members to join its highly regarded team of Conservation and Pest Management (CPM) operators.
The CPM program, in which volunteer operators assist Parks Victoria in controlling pest and invasive species on Parks Victoria-managed land, has enhanced the role of hunting in the community. Accredited SSAA Victoria members are given the opportunity to participate in pest control operations in some of Victoria’s unique and iconic parks and reserves.
While conventional hunting skills are required, it is a pest management program. Many operations are carried out at night, using specialist equipment, and potential volunteers should ensure they have the availability and technical skills necessary. A commitment to participate in programs on a regular basis is required.
To address an oversupply of accredited operators, two years ago SSAA Victoria began reviewing, revamping and/or revalidating all areas of the CPM program. A pool of hundreds of operators – many of whom rarely participated in the program – has been reduced significantly. Now there is room to bring on new volunteers
The Association developed a new CPM course in collaboration with Parks Victoria. It consists of four theory modules and a practical marksmanship assessment. This course is designed to ensure the CPM program is conducted in an ethical and humane manner and that volunteers show respect to the animals, the environment and to the Association.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of this program, not all applicants will be successful. Courses will be conducted on a needs basis and successful applicants will be notified when and where courses will be held.
If you believe you have the skills, experience and dedication to join our team, please complete the application form. Completed applications can be emailed to the CPM Manager Rhys Coote at email@example.com or posted to Unit 3/26 Ellingworth Parade, Box Hill, Victoria 3128.
