Message for duck hunters: Bittern at Lake Cullen

A number of threatened Australasian Bittern have been observed at Lake Cullen State Game Reserve, west of Kerang, The Game Management Authority has informed SSAA and asked that we make any of our members who may hunt the area aware of the Bittern’s presence.

The GMA is also erecting temporary signage at the entrances to the wetland, have placed a notification on the Game Hunting Victoria phone app and will conduct on-site education to hunters when patrolling. GMA are not considering closing the wetland to hunters at this stage.

Australasian Bittern tend to be a shy bird, usually hiding in thick reed beds. No duck hunter should ever mistake them for a duck. Members are simply being informed that they are in the area and to, as always, positively identify your target before shooting.
