‘Australians Can Beat Anything’ Ad Campaign Launches

SSAA Victoria is calling out the Advertising Council Australia for its blatant attack on law-abiding firearm owners – using images of surrendered firearms after the 1996 National Firearms Agreement, to help rally Australians to get vaccinated.

The use of such images to suggest that the destruction of firearms belonging to law-abiding citizens was in some way a victory over a ‘crisis’ is an insult to the tens of thousands of law-abiding Australian citizens that had to surrender their firearms – because of the actions of one criminal. Studies show that the firearm death rate began falling before the buyback took place in 1996. Australian Bureau of Statistics data show that the annual rate of gun-related deaths fell from 5 per 100,000 in 1980 to 2.7 per 100,000 in 1995.

To show images of firearms being destroyed after the 1996 gun grab and suggesting that it was a pivotal moment where Australia overcame a ‘crisis’, is outrageously misleading.

SSAA Victoria will always support measures which genuinely contribute to public safety. Regulation efforts should always focus on the illegal market rather than law-abiding firearm owners – who are some of Australia’s most highly regulated citizens.

But don’t let advertising executives project their holier-than-thou attitude to overestimate their social standing, importance, or their credibility.

For example, licensed firearm owners are far more law-abiding than ‘white collar’ executives. It is estimated that corporate crimes cost the Australian economy more than $8.5 billion a year and account for 40 per cent of the total cost of crime in Australia. Others, however, suggest that these figures are a gross underestimate of the true prevalence of such crimes.

It is also notable to mention that none of the Advertising Council Australia staff or Board of Directors appear to be medical professionals – but that doesn’t stop them urging Australians to be vaccinated. Will they assume liability if anyone suffers an injury after following the medical advice seen in their commercial and ‘gets vaccinated today’?

Would you buy a used car from an advertising executive, after all, they rank below journalists, bankers and even politicians on the Australian Council of Professions trustworthiness scale?

And let’s not forget, 600 thousand firearms – some irreplaceable – were destroyed without consultation with the affected, in a knee-jerk reaction by an anti-firearm politician.
