Big Game Rifle Club

In 1983, the Big Game Rifle Club (BGRC) was formed in Victoria as a club for large-calibre rifle enthusiasts. As a shooting discipline in the SSAA, it has spread to most of the states and territories where it is shot by like-minded members.

Many members have gravitated to the club through their interest in hunting the larger Australian game species and/or an interest in larger calibre rifles. It has certainly encouraged members to take the plunge and hunt dangerous game in Africa.

The BGRC conducts monthly shoots where members use modern and classic rifles (bolt action, single shot and double rifle) to compete in a wide range of events. These events cater not only for larger calibre rifles (0.338 through to 0.577), but also smaller centre fire calibres, Black Powder Express Rifles, Bore Guns, Paradox Guns and Rook Rifles. Some of the rifles used are original old classics, but the majority are of more modern manufacture.

The BRGC has two ranges. A dedicated Dangerous Game Range, on a treed range (which assists with simulating field conditions) with targets set out to approx. 45 metres. Next to the Dangerous Game Range is a 100 Metre range on which there is a pop-up target system as well as static targeting. On these two ranges, we conduct a wide variety of timed and untimed events where the emphasis is to try and simulate field hunting conditions as a means of improving accuracy through experience, but also sharpening rifle handling skills – loading, reloading and rapid fire by shooting against the clock.
