SSAA Victoria has developed a Kangaroo Firearm Proficiency Course for professional shooters for the purpose of commercially harvesting kangaroos.

There are a number of steps that have to be worked through to become a kangaroo harvester.
SSAA Victoria offers the Firearms Proficiency Training component of the requirements. You need to satisfactorily complete the theoretical and practical component of that training before you will be able to register as a kangaroo harvester.
You also need the Game Harvester Skill Set. At this stage SSAA Victoria does not offer that course.

How to get involved as a harvester:
To get involved in the program as a harvester, you’ll need to register through Service Victoria.
You will need to provide evidence of appropriate training including:

Interstate qualifications are accepted. Please note that this training is not currently offered in Victoria. It is expected that this might become available in Victoria in 2020.
Course details
The course is held at SSAA Victoria’s Eagle Park range, Big Game Rifle Club, Gifkins Road, Little River on Tuesday August the 18th, 2020.Training will commence at 9am with an expected completion time of 4pm.
(Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to make sure we get started on time).
The course has practical and theory components and will cover all basic aspects of firearm use. The theory component is hands-on and covers all you should know prior to using a firearm.
The course will also cover shooting skills and techniques and post-shooting procedures including the skills and knowledge required to humanly harvest animals.
Participants will then have their skills assessed on the range under the supervision of two qualified assessors and a range officer.
The practical assessment consists of getting a total of 5 shots out of 5 in a 75mm circle diameter at 100 metres. This is referred to as the National Humane Shooting Test Target.
Course requirements
We will provide ear and eye protection to all participants on the day, but you are welcome to bring your own. This is mandatory during the practical component of the course. Participants should wear enclosed footwear.
Participants are required to provide their own firearm and ammunition with a minimum calibre of .204 Ruger. Please ensure your firearm is sighted-in prior to attending.
Participants must show an original Government-issued photo ID (i.e. Drivers licence, passport, etc) on the day of the course.
