Practical Firearm Safety Course

• This course is only offered to Australian citizens and permanent residents. For full details regarding eligibility to apply for a firearm licence, visit the Victoria Police webpage here: https://www.police.vic.gov.au/eligibility-requirements.
• The course has an online theory component and a practical range shoot. You will receive access to the online theory two weeks before the booked practical date. You must complete all five (5) modules and the final theory test at least two business days before the practical.
• You will be required to provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI) upon enrolment. The USI can be easily created online. We are unable to issue a “Statement of Attainment” unless we have a valid USI. Click here to create your USI. You must find out if you already have a USI before creating a new one. Course details:

SSAA Victoria has developed the Practical Firearms Training Program: Introductory Course (National code: 22678VIC) to help develop shooting skills for people at all levels, with or without a firearms licence. It has also been recognised as a firearms safety course by Victoria Police – meaning completion of the course satisfies a requirement for obtaining a firearm licence.

Held at either SSAA Victoria’s Springvale, Little River, Wodonga, Warrnambool, East Gippsland (Buchan South), Mildura and Cobaw ranges, the PFTP: Introductory Course is designed to instil best practice and essential knowledge for new or intermediate firearms users.

Because the course is held at our ranges under the supervision of training staff and range officers, participants do not require a licence. It means our PFTP: Introductory Course is ideal for new shooters to become accustomed to firearms use before they take the step of getting a licence and purchasing their first firearm.

The course is also designed to give shooters a better understanding of their firearm and covers fundamental skills such as sighting-in a rifle (which is essential before hunting).

Topics covered in the PFTP: Introductory Course include:

• Firearm types, major parts and actions
• Basic firearm safety and risk management
• Safe storage, transportation and handling
• Ammunition anatomy and cartridge construction
• Shooting procedures and techniques
• Firearm maintenance
• Sighting-in
• Marksmanship

Safety requirements:

• Participants must wear enclosed footwear during the practical session and no singlets or skirts.
• We will provide earplugs (these are mandatory during the range shoot). All junior participants (under 18 years) will require eye protection, which can be provided by us if needed.

Course attendance:

• Please provide your full name, as it appears on your driver’s licence when registering for the course.
• Participants must show an original Government-issued ID (i.e. Driver licence, Passport, student id card, etc) on the day of the practical component.
• Cancellation (refund or reschedule): If you are unable to attend the course you have booked, you must notify the Training Department two (2) weeks prior to your booked practical session in order to obtain a refund or to reschedule. (All refunds will incur a $10 administration fee).
• Participants must have an English language skill level that enables them to clearly understand instructions and respond verbally and in writing to the competency assessments. To avoid disrupting other attendees, interpreters will not be permitted on the range. Those requiring language assistance can discuss alternative arrangements with the State Office.
• Juniors (aged 12 to 17) are welcome to attend. It is preferable that a parent or guardian is also an enrolled participant in the course. It’s a great opportunity for parents to help their kids get involved with the shooting sport. Provision can be made for juniors to complete the course without an adult present.

Cost:

SSAA members receive a discount on the course fee as another membership benefit (ammunition and targets are covered in the cost).

• Adults: $140 SSAA members (20% discount) / $175 non-members
• Juniors: $100 SSAA members and non-members.
