Course details
Commercial harvesters must demonstrate the capacity to handle firearms safely, understand the National Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos and Wallabies for Commercial Purposes and demonstrate shooting competency as designated under the Code. SSAA Victoria delivers this Nationally recognised commercial Firearm Proficiency Accreditation Course to assess those requirements. This course is also valid for deer harvesting.
The course has practical and theoretical components. The theory runs from 9 am until approximately 12 pm and covers firearms safety in the field, humane dispatch of animals, and more.
Participants are then assessed under the supervision of qualified assessors and a range officer.
Assessment shoot
- The assessment consists of placing 5 shots out of 5 in a 75mm diameter circle at 100 metres off the bench using frontal support (bipods, sandbag). This is referred to as the National Humane Shooting Test.
- Participants must bring their own firearm and at least 20 rounds of ammunition for the assessment. Please ensure your firearm is sighted-in at 100 metres before attending. The minimum calibre allowed is .204 Ruger.
- Hearing protection and enclosed footwear are mandatory during the practical component of the course.
- Participants must show their category B firearm licence on the day of the course.
