Election 2022 – Labor’s big win a surprise to many, here’s what it might mean for shooting

With the results coming in for the state election, it is now clear that the Labor Government will be returned for a third consecutive term, with a majority that will surprise many.

The clear majority gained by Labor negates the gains made by the Greens and shifts the political battleground away from the inner suburbs and back to the outer belt which has strong populations of shooters.

Whilst passing up the opportunity to make clear commitments to shooters ahead of the election, Labor did reiterate its commitment to safe, responsible and sustainable shooting and hunting and to working with SSAA Victoria and our colleagues in major organisations.

We will know the details of the various Ministries and Shadow Ministries in the coming days and the final make-up of the Upper House in a couple of weeks.

There are significant challenges facing shooting and hunting in the next few years, with a looming remaking of the Wildlife (Game) Regulations and a new Animal Welfare Act on the immediate agenda. The growth in shooting and hunting is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. The Association will continue highlighting to the government the need to invest in useful and accessible shooting facilities for all Victorians.

SSAA Victoria will review the election with its advisors in the coming week and update the advocacy plan to ensure that the Association is in the best position to address the challenges and make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead.
