The Weekly Times is reporting on firearm theft rates in recently released Victorian crime statistics.
It is encouraging that theft rates continue to decline, with the Weekly Times noting;
“Over the longer term, firearm crime thefts show a downward trend, dropping from about 1000 a year from 2013 to 2017, to about 700 from 2018 to 2020 and then slumping to about 400 a year during the recent Covid lockdown years.”
This data reconfirms what SSAA Victoria has long argued, that licenced firearm owners (now around a quarter of a million in Victoria) are not a significant source of concern regarding the criminal use of firearms.
New firearm storage requirements that came into effect last month should make it even more difficult for criminals to steal firearms from law-abiding owners.
SSAA Victoria offers members options for both firearm insurance and safe storage.
