New Victorian Cabinet a mixed bag for shooting and hunting

Victorian Premier Dan Andrews has announced the cabinet positions for his re-elected Government.

From a shooting and hunting perspective, there have been some significant changes and some welcome continuity.

Antony Carbines continues as Minister for Police. The Association looks forward to continuing to work with Minister Carbines and to actively contributing to firearm policy, both directly and through the Firearms Consultative Committee. Ros Spence has also retained Community Sport; we will be working with Minister Spence to prosecute the case for the continuation of the Shooting Sports Facilities Grants.

The oversight of hunting interests is less clear, with significant machinery of government changes occurring along with a shuffle of ministries. Ingrid Stitt becomes the Minister for the Environment, replacing Lily D’Ambrosio. Minister D’Ambrosio will oversee a departmental shift that sees agriculture move into a new Energy, Environment and Climate Action department. Gayle Tierney continues as Minister for Agriculture.

Fishing and Boating Minister Sonya Kilkenny takes on responsibility for hunting and for the Game Management Authority under the new ‘Outdoor Recreation’ portfolio.

SSAA Victoria will continue to advocate strongly and effectively for the Association’s 43,000 members and for the interests of shooting and hunting in Victoria more broadly.
