SSAA Victoria’s Practical Firearm Training Program continues to roll out in regional Victoria and will be at the Buchan Range in East Gippsland on Saturday, August 13, 2022.
The popular program, which includes range shooting, has seen full classes of new shooters keen to learn the process of becoming proficient. It has also been recognised as a firearms safety course by Victoria Police – meaning completion of the course satisfies a requirement of obtaining a firearms licence.
The program is ideal for those thinking about getting their firearms licence, young shooters, partners interested in sharing the shooting experience, and those keen to take the next step in hunting or target shooting.
Some fundamental skills covered include sighting in a rifle (which is essential before hunting), shooting techniques, firearm care and marksmanship.
The PFTP course has an online theory component and a practical component. Participants will have two weeks to complete the theory prior to their booked practical session. The practical component is completed at the range.
Topics covered in the PFTP include:
- Firearm types, major parts and actions
- Basic firearms safety and risk management
- Safe storage, transportation and handling
- Ammunition anatomy and cartridge construction
- Shooting procedures and techniques
- Firearm maintenance
- Sighting-in
- Marksmanship
Juniors (aged between 12 and 18) are also welcome to attend. It’s an excellent opportunity for parents to help their kids get involved with the shooting sports.
SSAA members receive a discount on the course fee as another membership benefit, and range fees, ammunition and targets are covered in the cost.
Cost:
Adults: $130 SSAA member, $160 non-member
Juniors: $100 SSAA member, $100 non-member
