Safety course instructors wanted

Victoria Police is calling on SSAA Victoria members to help run longarms Firearms Safety Courses in north-west Melbourne.

Footscray Police Station has a six-month waiting list of people wanting to do the course and not enough instructors to meet the demand.

“We are looking to expand our Firearms Safety Course Instructor (FSI) base with suitability-qualified, well-respected people from within (SSAA Victoria) and/or local SSAA-affiliated clubs,” Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said.

Senior Sergeant Riches is hoping to increase the current FSI base of three instructors to 25. The instructors will cover an area including Hobsons Bay, Werribee, Altona, Wyndham, Footscray and Williamstown.

FSI are generally retirees who are passionate about firearms safety and contributing to the community in a volunteer capacity.

To apply, applicants must complete this form and send it, along with a short CV detailing relevant experience and club affiliation details, to Senior Sergeant Riches.

Applicants with 10 or more years of firearm ownership and SSAA membership would be preferential.

Once qualified, FSI are issued with a certificate of proficiency and are able to deliver the relevant Victorian Firearms Safety Course on a rotating roster system.
