Victoria’s leading shooting body has welcomed today’s announcement that Commonwealth Games shooting events will be held in Gippsland.
The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia – Victoria (SSAA Victoria), has over 42,000 members and represents the interests of recreational shooters.
“Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley in particular has a large concentration of recreational shooters and hunters,” a SSAA Victoria spokesperson said “what is missing, is high-level, modern infrastructure to accommodate the massive growth in shooting. The Association is hopeful that this announcement means that the Victorian Government will invest in the future of shooting in the Latrobe Valley as a part of the Commonwealth Games legacy”.
SSAA Victoria is confident that having international competition shooting in the Commonwealth Games will encourage greater participation across the sport. “What the Commonwealth Games will do, is highlight just how accessible and enjoyable the shooting sports are, for all ages and abilities,” the SSAA Victoria spokesperson said.
SSAA Victoria, along with the ADA and FGA have been working together to prosecute a range of initiatives for shooting and hunting ahead of November’s State Election. Amongst them is funding to create an Eastern Shooting Complex in the Latrobe Valley, which would provide for the growth in shooting and contribute to the local economy.
