Spring Aerial Baiting on public land

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has advised SSAA Victoria of its plans for 1080 aerial baiting in October 2022.

The planned baiting includes State Forest areas popular with deer hunters using companion dogs and scent-trailing hounds.

In conventional ground baiting programs, where baits are buried, any residual baits are retrieved after the baiting program. DELWP advises that retrieving baits is impossible in an aerial baiting operation. DELWP also advises that “all access points to baiting sites will have signage warning of 1080 use”; however, it should be noted that the nature of deer hunting means that hunters will not necessarily access the forests at trailheads in the way that other bush users do.
