SSAA Victoria is on a committee advising the Minister for Police on firearm storage and transport matters.
Throughout the next several months, the committee – comprising the Association and its industry partners – will provide advice to Minister Lisa Neville.
The establishment of the committee comes after more than a year of media comments from individual Victoria Police officers claiming current storage and transport laws were inadequate.
One police officer claimed in December 2015 that he could open many firearm receptacles with his teeth. He also called for the introduction of new legislation that would force firearm owners to give their firearms to friends if they were going to be away from home for “a couple of days”.
Around the same time, Victoria Police also introduced new guidelines for firearm transport. The guidelines suggested all firearms should be kept in a padded cover or hard case and out of sight when being transported.
SSAA Victoria will update members on the advice provided to the Minister when possible.
