Young Guns take aim in the Goulburn Valley

Clay target shooting takes off in local schools

Since 2021, students across the Goulburn Valley have been taking aim and discovering the excitement of clay target shooting, thanks to the dedication of Craig Hunt and the enthusiasm he’s inspired in the community. What began as a small initiative has grown into a regular program held four times a year, giving young shooters and beginners alike a chance to experience the thrill of our sport.

The final event for the year was held on 15 October, with students from six schools across the region taking part. The range was alive with anticipation as students aged 12 to 14, from first-timers to those with some experience, gathered to compete and learn. Sixteen club volunteers were on hand to coach and guide the students, each using one of the volunteers’ personal 12-gauge shotguns to shoot 15 clay targets thrown from the club’s throwers.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the students’ confidence and skills grow with every target. The competition didn’t disappoint either, some outstanding performances led to exciting shoot-offs for the top spots!

In the Year 7 & 8 Boys division, William (Cobram Anglican Grammar School) claimed first place after an impressive 13 hits out of 15, followed by Levi (Greater Shepparton Secondary College) with 12, and Xavier (Greater Shepparton Secondary College) securing third after a shoot-off with 11 hits.

In the Year 7 & 8 Girls division, Elise (Cobram Anglican Grammar School) took first place with 10 hits, Sloane (Cobram Anglican Grammar School) was close behind with 9, and Merena (Shepparton Christian College) clinched third after a shoot-off with 8 hits.

Teachers also joined in the fun, with Jack from St Anne’s College, Shepparton taking out the one-off Teacher Event.

A big thank-you to Steve from Trelly’s for supporting the presentations, and to the Shepparton Police members who attended in support of the day.

It was fantastic to see the pride on the students’ faces as they received medals and merchandise vouchers from SSAA Victoria and SSAA National. These moments remind us why we’re passionate about introducing the next generation to our sport.

SSAA Shepparton extends its thanks to all volunteers, teachers, and Goulburn Murray District School Sports Victoria for making these events possible and to SSAA Victoria and SSAA National for their ongoing support.

Hosting four events each year, two for Years 7–8 and two for Years 9–12, gives students a hands-on introduction to clay target shooting, helping them develop skill, confidence, and respect around firearms while experiencing the camaraderie that defines our club.

On behalf of SSAA Shepparton, thank you to Craig Hunt and everyone involved. We look forward to welcoming these young shooters back on the range — and hopefully into the sport for years to come!
