Packing the right equipment is essential before heading off on a hunting trip. In extreme circumstances the equipment that you bring could mean the difference between life and death. In most cases having the right equipment can increase your chances of a humane kill and provide comfort while on a hunt. SSAA Victoria suggests the following as a basic checklist for most hunting trips. This is only a guide and additional equipment will be required in some circumstances.

- Battery pack (on foot only)
- Blaze orange vest or cap
- Camouflage clothing
- Coloured filters for light (spotlighting)
- Ear plugs
- First-aid kit
- Food and water
- Fox whistles (for foxes)
- Gators
- GPS
- Hand-held spotlight (for rabbits and foxes)
- Knife
- Map and compass
- Minimum calibre firearm
- Personal Locating Beacon (EPIRB optional)
- Rifle door rest
- Roof mount kit
- Secure cage or tray (back of ute only)
- Spotlight
- Spare globes for spotlight
- Sturdy boots with ankle support
- Sunscreen
- Torch
- UHF hand-held radio
- 4X4 utility or wagon
