SSAA’s Cobaw Range has now been certified for centrefire target rifle shooting to 100m and 200m.
The range opened its doors to centrefire on Saturday, April 9, after Senior Sergeant Andrew Armstrong from Victoria Police Licensing and Regulation Division granted the new certification on March 15.
“Centrefire certification at Cobaw has been a long-time coming,” SSAA Victoria Facilities Manager Shaun Doyle said, ” but it’s finally been approved by Victoria Police.
“This is a great positive for the range, which is now likely to attract new shooters and expand its membership.”
Cobaw President John Wilkinson, who has been in his post for 15 years, said shooters came flooding in at the weekend.
“They had that many shooters the team down there almost couldn’t handle it,” he said. “People have been waiting a really long time for the centrefire at Cobaw so we’ll get a lot more people coming down now.”
Shooting centrefire at Cobaw will be so popular that John predicts the range will become “a second Little River” in the future.
The influx of new shooters at Cobaw will breath new life into the Macedon Ranges complex, which has been run by a small group, including tireless Secretary Dino Tomisic, for years.
John said the club would be looking for new people to undertake Range Officer training through SSAA Victoria and assist with managing the busier firing line.
