Game changing huts announcement driven from within the Minister’s department

The Victorian Government’s announcement of a $1 million pilot program to establish new hunting huts across public land marks a milestone moment for recreational deer hunters, and a clear demonstration of support for the sector from within the Minister’s own department.

The “Game Changing Huts” initiative, revealed this week by Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos, will see the first purpose-built huts for licensed hunters constructed in Victoria’s forests, providing safe, sustainable accommodation options that encourage responsible and environmentally conscious hunting.

While it’s easy to view the announcement as a political win, it’s important to note where this idea truly came from. This project was not the result of lobbying or external campaigning; it was conceived, developed, and driven from within the Minister’s department itself. That is significant. It signals not only a new level of confidence in hunting’s social and economic legitimacy, but also a genuine recognition within government that hunters are valued participants in Victoria’s outdoor and regional economy. SSAA Victoria was pleased to engage constructively with the department on the development of this concept and we are excited to help to deliver its implementation.

The Premier’s statement described the huts as “game changing” for regional tourism and the hunting community – a phrase that carries weight (beyond being a half-reasonable pun), and for good reason. The design and placement of these huts will reflect modern expectations around safety, sustainability and accessibility, while recognising the long tradition of recreational hunting in Victoria.

That’s an outcome worth acknowledging. For a concept like this to originate from within the department, rather than being pushed from outside, shows that the Minister’s office is not only listening, but actively enabling positive, practical ideas that strengthen the culture and sustainability of hunting in Victoria.

SSAA Victoria acknowledges and appreciates that leadership.
