Hunters given access to Snake Island

Balloted hog deer hunting will be implemented on Snake Island, near Wilson’s Promontory, in February 2017.

Eight people will be allowed to hunt on the island at any one time under the new Victorian Government trial.

The Snake Island model will follow Blond Bay State Game Reserve and Boole Poole Peninsula, where balloted hunting has been in place for the past 28 years.

Member for Northern Victoria Daniel Young, from the Shooters and Fishers Party, applauded the plan that was announced by Victorian Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio last week.

“I recently had the pleasure of speaking to an elderly gentleman at a club event. He had been entering the existing ballot for hog deer for many years with no success,” he said.

“Unfortunately he feels that this year may be his last chance while he is fit enough to hunt. The opportunities created with the opening of Snake Island will help many more people fulfil what was, in this gentleman’s case, a lifelong dream.

“Unique opportunities like this contribute to making Victoria a world-class hunting destination.”

The trial is expected to bring new visitors to the island and inject funds into the region.
